Models & designs

What are the benefits of a hard-shell roof top tent?
Hard-shell roof top tents are the most comfortable and robust option: the aerodynamic design reduces drag, and the rigid shell reliably protects against rain, wind and the elements. Many models open in under 60 seconds and are ready to use immediately. When closed, the shell doubles as compact storage for light camping gear. View all hard-shell models.
Who is a folding roof top tent right for?
Folding roof top tents are compact in transit and offer plenty of space once set up. Their low weight and centre of gravity make them ideal for smaller vehicles – from cars and SUVs to pick-ups. The fabrics withstand over 100,000 flex cycles in lab testing without loss of quality, plus the entry price is lower. View all folding tents.
Why are Gordigear roof top tents so durable?
Insights from over 25 years in the field and feedback from more than 1,200 customers worldwide flow directly into development:
  • Reinforced constructions for high stability at low weight
  • Sealing systems for reliable protection against rain and moisture
  • Smart ventilation for a pleasant climate inside the tent
  • Easy handling during setup and pack-down
How long does setting up a roof top tent take?
How long setup takes depends on the tent's design. Hard-shell roof top tents open in under 60 seconds in many cases, making them especially convenient for travellers who change location often. Folding tents usually need just a few minutes depending on model and size, and in return offer a particularly generous sleeping area.

No special skills are required for setup. After a short familiarisation, opening and closing becomes quick and routine. Many travellers especially value that the sleeping quarters are ready in next to no time – with no tent poles to sort or pegs to drive in.

Typical setup times:
  • Hard-shell tents: often under 60 seconds
  • Folding tents: usually 2–5 minutes
  • Annexes and extensions: a few extra minutes depending on equipment
On road trips, weekend getaways or expeditions, a roof top tent saves valuable time and makes spontaneous overnight stops possible almost anywhere camping is permitted.

Buying & vehicle compatibility

How much does a roof top tent cost?
Prices vary by design, features and size:
  • Entry level (folding tents): from approx. €1,000 – light, compact, ideal to get started
  • Mid-range (hard-shell tents): approx. €2,000–3,500 – more comfort, fastest setup, high stability
  • Premium (with annex or accessories): from approx. €3,500 – maximum features and space
High-quality roof top tents also hold a stable resale value.
How many berths do I need?
  • 2 people: ideal for couples and solo travellers – light and quick to set up
  • 3–4 people: more space and storage, perfect for families
  • 4–5 people: with an annex or awning room for maximum comfort
Annexes and awnings further extend living and sleeping space.
Will the tent fit my car?
Most roof top tents can be mounted on a wide range of vehicle types – from small cars and SUVs to estates, vans, off-roaders and pick-ups. What matters are the vehicle's permitted roof load, the roof shape and a suitable roof rack system.

For popular brands like VW, Toyota, Ford, Land Rover, Jeep or Mercedes there are many proven solutions. But compact vehicles such as the Dacia Duster, Suzuki Jimny, Mini Countryman or Subaru Crosstrek are often perfectly suitable for a roof top tent too.

Before buying, check the following points:
  • The vehicle's permitted dynamic roof load
  • Suitable roof racks and their load capacity
  • Roof shape and mounting options
  • Total vehicle height including the tent
  • Planned number of people and tent weight
Important: The static roof load when parked is usually well above the dynamic roof load while driving. That is why most vehicles can easily carry the weight of a roof top tent and the people sleeping in it.

If you are unsure, you can check your vehicle model directly or ask our team for advice.
Vehicle expertise & checkpoints
  • Check dynamic and static roof load in the vehicle manual
  • Choose a mounting position to suit roof shape and vehicle type
  • Verify load capacity of roof racks and mounts
  • Mind total vehicle height incl. tent (car parks, garages)
  • Realistically assess effects on handling and fuel consumption
Static load capacity is typically many times higher than the dynamic roof load.
Can I mount a roof top tent alone?
Yes, with some preparation most roof top tents can be mounted yourself. The prerequisites are suitable roof racks and enough space to position the tent safely on the vehicle. For the first installation, however, we recommend a second person, as a roof top tent can weigh between roughly 45 and 100 kilograms depending on the model.

The actual fastening is usually done with a proven mounting system that is bolted onto the roof racks. With the right tools, mounting is often completed within 30 to 90 minutes.

Tips for the first installation:
  • Mount the roof racks correctly beforehand and check they are firmly seated
  • Lift the tent onto the vehicle with two people if possible
  • Check the mounting points according to the instructions
  • Retighten the bolted connections after the first few trips
  • Mind the total vehicle height including the tent
If you want to remove and remount your tent regularly, you can also use hoist systems or garage lifts. This makes it easy to store the tent comfortably and remount it quickly when needed.

Use, climate & care

How is moisture reduced inside the tent?
While sleeping, a person releases up to two litres of moisture into their surroundings each night through breathing and body heat. To keep condensation inside the tent to a minimum, Gordigear roof top tents rely on smart ventilation, breathable materials and continuous air exchange with reliable weather protection at the same time.

Additional measures such as anti-condensation mats, open vents and regularly re-proofed fabrics help to draw moisture away and keep the sleeping climate pleasant – even on longer trips or in changing weather.

Tips for a pleasant tent climate:
  • Use the vents regularly
  • Add an anti-condensation mat against moisture
  • Keep fabrics clean and re-proofed
  • Let the tent dry fully after rain
Can I use a roof top tent in winter?
Gordigear roof top tents are designed for year-round use and are suitable both for summer trips and for tours in low temperatures. Robust, windproof materials protect against the elements, while smart ventilation systems help to reduce moisture and condensation.

The elevated sleeping position keeps distance from the cold or wet ground and adds comfort. For trips to particularly cold regions, cold protection can be further improved with suitable accessories such as thermal inner tents or anti-condensation mats.

Advantages in winter:
  • Protection from wind, rain and snow
  • Materials usable all year round
  • Less condensation thanks to ventilation
  • Distance from the cold ground
  • Expandable with winter accessories
This makes Gordigear roof top tents ideally suited for adventures in every season.
Optimised space & sleeping areas
The model range offers ideally sized sleeping areas for any number of people, with XL versions up to 5.3 m² of floor space. Smart storage maximises usable room; annexes and awnings extend it significantly.
Proper cleaning, care and storage
Remove loose dirt, clean the fabric only with material-friendly care products and keep zippers smooth with silicone spray. Re-proof seams after heavy use. Dry everything thoroughly before storing in a dry, well-ventilated place – this reliably prevents mould.
Practical extensions for your roof top tent
Annexes create extra living space, an awning provides shade next to the tent. Add solar panels for off-grid trips, ladder extensions, mobile showers and kitchen solutions – turning your tent into a fully-fledged base camp.
Durability, spare parts & support
A high-quality roof top tent often accompanies its owners over many years and countless trips. That is why Gordigear places great value on durable materials, robust construction and long-term spare-parts supply. Components such as zippers, gas struts, ladders or fabric elements can be replaced individually if needed, instead of having to replace the entire tent.

This not only increases the lifespan but also protects your investment in the long term. Our experienced service team supports you with questions about spare parts, care, mounting and accessories – even years after purchase.

Your benefits:
  • Spare parts available long-term
  • Repair instead of full replacement
  • Personal support from roof top tent experts
  • Sustainable, long-lasting product design
  • Support before and after your purchase
This way your Gordigear roof top tent stays a reliable companion on your travels for many years.
